HORROR

From Hell

Genre: Horror
Overall 8
Acting 9
Originality 6
Production Value 9

Johnny Depp stars in this well produced Jack the Ripper movie that is not afraid of asking some very searching questions of the whole Ripper legend.

Ever since the tragic events of the Ripper period the world has been fascinated by it. Who was the Ripper? Nobody has ever proven anything. And yet there are plenty of suspicions and a lot of them point to cover ups, secret societies and even Royalty. This film runs through all of these and makes it’s own decision with a few paranormal conclusions thrown in. Depp himself plays the role of detective extremely well as you would expect and was the perfect choice considering some of the more lucid drug moments in the movie.

Well acted by all, stunning scenery and costumes, great screenplay and just overall a class film. If you are squeamish  at all then it’s most definitely not for you because there are some very graphic scenes. That said, the acting alone makes the film worth watching because the film is packed with great British class acts. Highly recommended.

Exorcist Chronicles

Genre: Horror

A British horror film in a truly British style but with a world-wide scope. There have been plenty of exorcist style films and they are all pretty much the same, but Exorcist Chronicles throws all that out of the window and takes a fresh and to be honest exciting approach.

A priest and a scientist are thrown together to investigate the growing epidemic of possessions. They are sent to a place called No Man’s Land and find themselves in a situation that can only be likened to The Wicker Man. This gives it a true feeling of that classic British horror film like Hammer House.

Overall, a great film that considering it’s an indie flick has amazing effects, landscapes and shots, not to mention a dark and sinister story. Recommended.

Aeon: The Last Vampire

Genre: Horror

Do you like vampire films? Prefer Twilight or Bram Stokers, Dracula? Either way, Aeon: The Last Vampire is nothing like anything you have seen before.

A huge underground complex, holding prisoner a dark, evil beast from ages past. An FBI agent investigating. Bring the two together and you find yourself in a dialogue of twisted philosophy that shines a light on modern humanity where its own evil is revealed. A twist of the knife in the back of mankind that will probably not be desired by those who think of human civilisation as something great and good.

Well acted, well scripted, fantastic effects and cinematography and an overall feeling of coming doom, make this film one that will probably become a cult classic. Recommended.

The Stone

Do you miss the good old days of Hammer House of Horror or The Wicker Man cult type films? Well, then The Stone is definitely worth watching. A haunted and derelict mansion, a strange group of ghost hunters, weird and crazy locals, legends, witchcraft and cults all come together in a story that is as confusing as it is brilliant.

The film has won awards and the style of filming is unlike most other films you will see and there’s a soundtrack that just feels so wrong but strangely right. A 21st century Hammer classic in so many ways with some hot British horror babes and even a stupid American. Recommended.

Paranormal Haunting: Cures of the Blue Moon Inn

Genre: Horror
Overall 8
Acting 7
Originality 8
Production Value 7

Cast your mind back to the 1970’s and to the golden age of British horror cult classics and you find the feeling this film brings to mind. Directly aimed at that feeling and period, the film succeeds and I was half expecting to find the Hammer Horror logo appear.

It is the night of the blue moon and a group of strange folk turn up to the Blue Moon Inn to watch the once in a lifetime spectacle. The locals are odd, the innkeeper is even odder and there’s a sense of doom from the first moment. Throw into the mix various pagans who are all fearful of what is to come, a British detective played in reality by a well-known author on mythology and legends, and various other odd characters and you start to get the feeling something big is going down.

Satanic cults emerge and we discover the innkeeper is in fact a very ancient character who lives forever on the blood of victims taken on a full moon. A highly dramatic scene at the end of the film is the culmination of the movie and I will not spoil it for you, but just suggest if you are squeamish then maybe turn away.

Sometimes indie filmmakers even without big budgets can show Hollywood how a truly entertaining film can be made without big names and big budgets and this is one of them. Recommended.

The Village
Genre: Horror
Overall: 6/10
Acting: 10/10
Originality: 6/10
Production value: 6/10
A truly ambitious addition to M. Night Shyamalan’s film catalogue and probably one of the most controversial among critics. A tale of an isolated village kept secluded by a fear of the unknown; Shyamalan creates a suspenseful and foreboding atmosphere that will gnaw at the dark places in your imagination. A master of the unseen threat, the film evokes the same dread and insecurity we felt during Signs. Unfortunately for some the movie does come strapped to the gimmicky threat of the Shyamalan twist time bomb, a bomb that this particular director just will not diffuse.  Without spoiling the obviously imminent twist, I will say that it may disappoint some who were hoping for a scarier conclusion. Overall a decent watch with some great acting and a few moments that will definitely set your heart racing.

The Photographer

Genre: Horror
Overall 7

Everybody has heard stories about a sleazy photographer and his vulnerable models, but nobody to my knowledge has actually gone out and made a film about it. Well, now they have.

An extremely low budget film shot in the dark, bleak and cold north of England that just makes your skin creep. The fact the budget is low actually helps the film with the feel of a fly on the wall cheapness. And that’s how films like this can win over some Hollywood attempts. It is all too clear that big budget effects are brought into play all too often to make a film appear cheap (Blair Witch), but for me there’s something really cool about “knowing” this was cheap and seeing how the rawness plays out.

Most of the cast are from the music band, Great Northern Hotel, and also wrote the score. I have a lot of respect for underground films like this so go and buy it and support people who are trying their best to give us some sick entertainment.

Lady of the Dark

Genre: Horror

Can one actress carry an entire film with no other actors involved? I didn’t think so until the award-winning actress, Melanie Denholme, proved me wrong in Lady of the Dark.

A truly strange and erotic film that draws you slowly into the life of this cursed lady. One day, while hubby is away she is bitten by a snake. Things start to take a dark twist as her very mind is altering. Confusion, fear and then realisation of who she is becoming all start to speed up and we discover our Lady of the Dark is turning into a vampire.

Yet again, British Director, Philip Gardiner, takes a standard story and twists it completely, just as he does with zombies in Dead Walkers and Exorcism in Exorcist Chronicles. The actress herself takes it a whole step further and keeps you fully engrossed. If you like a film that shocks, is sexy and warps your brain, then this would be for you. NSFW.

Dead Walkers: Rise of the 4th Reich

Genre: Horror

If you want bizarre, if you love Nazi’s, spies, intrigue and more than a few twists and turns and you don’t mind a film that didn’t have a huge budget, the Dead Walkers is for you.

The beauty of indie films like these is the fact that the stories and unusualness have to be strong because the on screen talent and big budget effects are missing. That said, the acting and effects in this film are not half bad anyway.

The film tells the story of a mentally confused British secret agent who saw things his mind could not cope with.  Slowly the plot unravels as we discover a Nazi base in Romania building an army of ultra crazy “vrill” to take over the world. In reality, the vrill are really a new twist on the zombie, but these are not like ordinary zombies at all.

Lots of guns, action, crazy British babes and a cool plot actually make Dead Walkers worth watching.

Paranormal Activity
Genre: Horror
Overall: 6/10
Acting: 7/10
Originality: 5/10
Production Value: 6/10
Although the use of the ‘found footage’ gimmick has been going around for a while now, there are those few occasions where it really does work just right. This is one of those occasions; the creators of paranormal activity have used the premise of home video to fantastic and downright horrifying effect. There are moments in paranormal activity that will make you relive those childhood fears you thought you had buried away years ago, this film will have 30 year old men thinking twice before they switch off the lights. The film does take a long time to really get going however, if you love watching a boring couple go about their lives then you’ll be in your element; that is until you’ve crapped your pants and realised you should just have watched MTV.

Paranormal Apparition

A new horror film for official release in October.

Hard hitting, packed with effects and a scream a minute, Paranormal Apparition was immediately taken up by some of America’s biggest retailers for the big Halloween push in October.

The story goes that when Mr. and Mrs. Myers move into their highly coveted Beverly Hills home, they wonder why the price tag is too good to be true. Their daughter, Danielle, discovers the truth when a neighbor tells her one of the previous owners was murdered there years before. When Danielle falls prey to the attacks of the ghostly victim who lived there, Danni's dream home turns into the house from hell as she is tortured and haunted by the evil apparition. As Danielle's cries go unheard by her oblivious parents, she realizes she must get out of the house as quickly as possible or she is going to be the next victim of an even greater threat.

Unlike Paranormal Activity, this film is much faster and you don’t have to hang around for forty minutes before something actually happens. Superbly acted and well-produced for an indie grindhouse horror film it’s already being called a “cult classic”. And at over 80 minutes there’s a lot going on.

The film is from the rapidly growing label, World Wide Multi Media, who have become known for specializing in the more bizarre and radical films with a predominance on the horror, paranormal and slasher style movies. Not a label for the squeamish or easily disturbed and Paranormal Apparition lives up to their style in every sense.

“I’ve made a few horrors over the past few years and I can safely say this packs a punch. I’d be surprised if it didn’t really attract the cult horror fans out there.” Aquinas, Director of Anna: Scream Queen Killer.

Out in stores in October, the film can be purchased online now at www.wwmm.info
